Vikas Khan, our recruitment apprentice, has been featured on BBC Bitesize to help inspire the next generation of school leavers to consider an apprenticeship to kick-start their careers.
Based at our UK headquarters in Slough, Vikas caught the BBC’s eye after being named the 2018 South West ‘Intermediate Apprentice of the Year’ in the regional finals of last year’s National Apprenticeship Awards (NAA). In his interview, he explains what inspired him to begin the programme and talks about what he loves about his job.
Vikas assumed recruitment account management responsibilities for one of the company’s key automotive clients after just six months of his year-long, NVQ Level 2 programme and has now secured a full time role with one of our major clients.
Vikas said: “One of the things I love most about my job is my colleagues. Everyone is so supportive and really helped me to settle in when I first joined. I also enjoy playing a part in helping people to achieve their career goals – the best part of my role is when I help someone to find a new job of their own.”
He added: “When I left school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, I just knew that higher education wasn’t for me. Doing an apprenticeship provided me with an alternative route where I was able to gain practical skills and experience on the job. It’s great to have my story featured on the BBC Bitesize website and I hope it demonstrates to other people in my position that there are many different routes available to help them achieve their dream roles.”
Sally Neale, HR Director, CRM Solutions, UK & Ireland, Arvato, said: “Every year, our apprenticeship programme gives young people the opportunity to develop essential practical and interpersonal skills needed to start their careers. We’re committed to supporting the local communities we work in and providing youth employment and training is one way we’re achieving this. The success of our apprenticeship schemes have paved the way to a full Apprenticeship Academy approach.
“Vikas has brought so much enthusiasm and energy to the team since joining us as an apprentice. We are exceptionally proud of his achievements so far and he’s developing into a well-rounded HR professional. His story is as a great example to school leavers who may be undecided on their next steps and shows you can excel quickly in your chosen career through our apprenticeship programmes.”
Alongside his success at the National Apprenticeship Awards, Vikas also scooped the accolade for ‘Best Young Ambassador Apprentice’ at the 2018 Berkshire Apprenticeship Awards last November. The judges were impressed by his commitment to Arvato’s charity initiatives, organising World Book Day and Diversity Day events that have raised over £1,500.
Bitesize is the BBC’s free online study support resource which aids students with their schoolwork and provides guidance on their future career choices. Vikas’ story was featured on the careers page as part of its ‘world of work’ series, which highlights the variety of job options available to school leavers.
