Our Director of Marketing and Communications, Bettina Grab, recently gave an inspiring talk to students at London Metropolitan University’s Fast Forward Festival about her professional journey, offering advice on how to pursue a career in her field.
The month-long jobs fair, held across the University’s three city centre campuses in November 2017, aimed to help students secure their dream job after university.
During her talk, ‘Being a Marketing and Communications Director’, Bettina discussed her career to date and outlined some of the key skills, qualities and experiences graduates should equip themselves with to embark on a successful career in marketing and communications.
To frame her advice, Bettina discussed what her position at Arvato involves, the importance of her department within the wider Arvato business and the highlights and challenges of her day to day role. She closed by providing the advice she would offer her younger self starting out after finishing university.
Bettina commented: “Talking to such an engaged, enthusiastic group of students was a really rewarding experience. I’m passionate about what I do and relished the opportunity to use what I’ve learned during my career to help students get into the challenging, fast paced world of marketing and communications.
“The graduate jobs market is more competitive than it’s ever been. It’s essential for students to gain the knowledge, practical experience and skills they need to stand out from the crowd.
“My advice to the students was to do as many internships or part-time jobs relevant to marketing and communications as possible while they’re at uni, don’t wait until you’ve finished your degree. And stay on top of how the industry is developing by signing up to newsletters, reading blogs from marketers or starting your own website, blog or social media feed about what you’re passionate about.”
