Our HR team has assisted Chesterfield Borough Council in achieving a Silver accreditation from Investors in People (IiP), an internationally-recognised standard which defines the best approach to leading, supporting and managing employees.
The team has helped the council to prepare for and undergo the intensive auditing process carried out by the IiP team.
In advance of the audit, a new Workforce Strategy was written that was aligned to the IiP’s themes and supported by a robust action plan. This was overseen by a Workforce Strategy group, which implemented new performance objectives designed to standardise the management of employees across the council. We also designed new online tools, to assist with employee learning and development, including a Performance and Development Review (PDR) system and an online learning platform, giving staff access to over 70 courses.
Because the IiP assessment process includes an employee survey, staff engagement in the process was key. Our team used its ongoing programme of ICT training to introduce employees to the IiP’s online survey – helping the council achieve a 39% completion rate, against the 25% minimum requirement – and facilitated a number of more in-depth face-to-face interviews with staff.
With the accreditation successfully achieved, our work won’t stop. The team is now helping our partners at the council put in place the various recommendations made by IiP. The feedback from the staff survey will be used to develop this year’s action plan for the Workforce Strategy group.
Kate Harley, Head of HR at Chesterfield, Arvato UK & Ireland, said: “We’re always looking for ways to add value to our partnerships and being able to apply our expertise in HR to support the IiP audit was a perfect opportunity.
“A Silver grade is a fantastic achievement for the partnership and we plan to support Chesterfield in the run up to the next audit in three years’ time by applying the learning from this process and reviewing progress against the recommendations IiP have suggested.”
